MoD cuts bite hard

Reports of impending announcement come within a week of the Pre-Budget Report, which confirmed an extra £2.5bn in the MoD budget to cover the cost of Afghanistan in 2010-11.
According to the Mondays FT, one area of contention remaining at Whitehall is the production timetable of the remaining Astute submarines. The lead ship in the class, HMS Astute, arrived at its home port in the Clyde at the end of November ahead of its first commission in 2010, with the second, HMS Artful expected in 2011.
