Former RBS boss Fred “the Shred” Goodwin has been left red-faced when he fell for a conman's spoof letter of sympathy.
Goodwin struck up a bizarre pen-friendship with Colin Nugent, who claimed to be a 62-year-old ex-teacher, but was in fact comedy writer Geoff Atkinson.
In his first letter, 'Nugent' wrote that Goodwin had had "a rotten time" and claimed that it was a"good news story" that the UK was rich enough to support his enormous payout.
