Many people bemoan the passing of years and growing older, but in this day and age in which people are both living and working for longer, what was once seen to be retirement age is now more like an extended middle age. However, there are many perks still available for those who, though growing older, are hardly growing old.
- Railcards for people who are 60 or over. Try not to be put off by the term “senior railcard” – the benefits of possessing one of these nifty little things are numerous. Not only do you get ⅓ off standard and first class rail travel throughout, but they also run frequent offers to save you even more money on things like weekend hotel breaks, membership with art funds, and various restaurants.
- Great deals on insurance. Many insurance companies offer fantastic deals for people over 50 which are well worth taking advantage of. For example, when it comes to house insurance RIAS offer excellent rates only available to those who are over 50, with buildings cover up to £1 million and contents cover up to £50,000. The perfect way to enjoy the benefits of growing older, and also to ensure the safety of any inheritance left to your family, it’s definitely a deal to be considered.
- Free travel in London. More appropriately named than the “senior railcard”, London’s “freedom pass” provides a great deal for anyone over 60 – free travel on London’s public transport network. For those living in the capital, this will provide a great change from paying up to £9.40 for a peak time adult travel card every day. If, like many people over 60, you are still working regularly then this essentially guarantees you free (travel is free after 9am) or certainly much cheaper journeys to and from work.
- Preferential treatment. Places that might not have held you in high esteem as a customer before may suddenly see you in a whole different light once you hit 50. Alliance & Leicester’s Premier 50 current accounts provide all the benefits of a ‘premier account’ as well as other perks such as a 0% EAR typical overdraft with no interest or usage fees on arranged overdrafts for the first 12 months from when you open the account. Expect to be treated well by your bank, and with a certain degree of reverence. Anything less – take your business elsewhere!
- Superiority. It may sound like a joke, but being older generally earns you more and more respect from others. The assumption is that you have both wisdom and life experience – things that automatically earn you superiority over those with less to offer. Use this superiority to your advantage as you’ve certainly earned it!
