Middle-class murmurs

With only a matter of weeks to go until the Comprehensive Spending Review, it's clear that tough decisions are being made in Number 11. But will they be the right ones?

Chancellor George Osborne this week sparked a storm of middle class indignation by taking the axe to child benefit for people on the top tax rate, making it clear, say his supporters, that the better off must play their part in the forthcoming pain.

Of course this sparked fury from many quarters, although it clearly created a dilemma for Labour by forcing them to argue in favour of the wealthier being allowed to keep more money. There's likely to be more middle class pain to come.

Today at the Tory Party Conference in Birmingham David Cameron was set to add his voice to insist that those on higher incomes must 'shoulder more of the burden' as the Coalition struggles to balance the books. So far the Coalition seems to be just about getting away with it: a YouGov poll in The Sun found overwhelming support for the principle that child benefit should be withdrawn from the rich, with 83% saying it should be scrapped for those on "higher incomes", against just 15% who disagreed.

How long that will last remains to be seen. October 20th will be an important day for everyone in the UK. The criticisms raised this week will seem like a muted murmur compared to the cacophony that will undoubtedly be heard then.

child benefit

I don't think anyone can disagree with the principal of the richest losing more, but these things need to be thought about to make them progressive and fair. How can a family with 2 working parents earning £43k each get it whereas a family with one working parent earning £45k loses it? This becomes doubly odd, as the couple on £45k would presumably get the money if they were divorced.
